A Leadership Program for Principals
Friday, 10 July 2015
Today the principal of a school is not only meant to be an educator, but he or she is also expected to play the role of a visionary, an efficient administrator, a role model for students, a mentor for teaching and non-teaching staff and a brand ambassador for parents. A principal is expected to foster a positive climate for institutional development. After all, the leadership challenges that a principal faces in a school are fairly complex and challenging.
It is therefore only essential that principals are trained on developing strategic thinking and leadership skills to enable him or her to choose a roadmap for the school, develop relations among all members of the school community (teachers, students, parents, and local community) and to make good use of the resources at hand.
In order to address this critical need, Tata ClassEdge, in partnership with the S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, held the Principal Leadership Programme on May 29 and 30, in Mumbai. The programme was attended by principals of Tata ClassEdge schools from all over India. The focus of the programme was to build leadership and a culture of excellence in educational institutions.
The workshop was aimed at:
- Examining the contemporary challenges in the educational landscape and strengthening abilities to respond to the expectations of a wide variety of stakeholders
- Increasing managerial competencies of planning and prioritizing
- Building synergistic teams and adopting a leadership style to create a conducive and enabling work climate
Ashok Pandey, Principal, Ahlcon International School, Delhi says, “The leadership programme held at SPJIMR, Mumbai under the aegis of Tata ClassEdge was markedly different. The learning expectations were set in advance, the facilitators were very effective in meeting those expectations and the context was developed well. I was particularly impressed with the session on building institutional culture.”
According to Mrs. K.V. Jagadheeswari, Principal, SRGDS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai, “The programme activities helped us develop civic sense and social skills. Above all, it generated interest and stimulated thinking about the themes presented”.
In general, the principals found the programme extremely relevant to their work situations and self-development. As Roshan Menezes, Administrator, Carmel High School & PU College, Bengaluru, said, “It has been a tremendous learning experience for me at the leadership programme. Many new ideas to implement, many areas to improve self in a leadership role, the practical discussions, case study and interactions have all been enriching for me. I learnt a lot and met some of the finest people I have known over these two days”.
Appreciating the initiative taken by Tata ClassEdge, a representative of Horizon Academy, Nashik, said, “The programme was very insightful and gave us valuable perspective on leadership and management as well as on the role of an educationist.”
